The 12 Human Design Profiles

In human design, your type tells you how your energy works and your authority tells you how to decide. (Types and authority.) Your profile is the third piece: the role you play in life — how you learn, how you relate to other people, and how the world tends to see you.

Ra Uru Hu, who founded human design, called the profile the costume your purpose wears. It's often the part of the chart people recognise fastest.

Where your profile comes from

Your profile is two numbers, like 3/5 or 6/2.

  • The first number is the line of your Personality Sun — the conscious part of you, calculated from the moment of birth. It's the side you know.
  • The second number is the line of your Design Sun — the unconscious part, calculated from roughly 88 days before birth. It's the side other people often see before you do.

Each "line" is one of six, and each has a character.

The six lines

Line 1 — the Investigator. Needs a solid foundation of knowledge to feel secure. Researches, studies, wants to know how things work before acting. Insecurity comes from not knowing enough.

Line 2 — the Hermit. Natural talent that works best when left alone. Doesn't always know how it does what it does. Needs time by itself and tends to get "called out" by others who see its gifts.

Line 3 — the Martyr. Learns by trial and error. Bumps into things, finds out what doesn't work, and becomes resilient. Its "mistakes" are discoveries.

Line 4 — the Opportunist. Everything comes through its network. Opportunities, work and love come through friends and people it already knows. Needs stable foundations and dislikes sudden change.

Line 5 — the Heretic. Others project expectations onto it: saviour, fixer, problem-solver. When it delivers practical solutions, its reputation soars; when the projection breaks, it can be burned. Needs to manage its reputation carefully.

Line 6 — the Role Model. Lives in three phases. Until around 30, it experiments much like a 3rd line. From around 30 to 50, it steps back — "on the roof" — to observe and heal. After around 50, it comes down as an embodied role model of what it has learned.

The 12 profiles

1/3 — Investigator / Martyr. Researches deeply, then tests it in real life. Builds knowledge from study and from things breaking. Needs to feel secure before committing.

1/4 — Investigator / Opportunist. Solid foundation, shared through a network. Influences the people it knows through what it's studied. Resistant to changing its foundations.

2/4 — Hermit / Opportunist. Natural talent that needs solitude, but gets called out by its network. Tension between withdrawing and being available to friends.

2/5 — Hermit / Heretic. Gifted and private, yet others project onto it as a problem-solver. Needs to know when to answer the call and when to stay home.

3/5 — Martyr / Heretic. Learns through experience and is seen as someone who can fix things. Resilient, practical, often misjudged. Its failures become wisdom others need.

3/6 — Martyr / Role Model. Trial and error — twice as much in the first 30 years — becoming wisdom. A life of learning by living.

4/6 — Opportunist / Role Model. Network-based influence that matures into role-model authority. Relationships are everything; trust builds over decades.

4/1 — Opportunist / Investigator. A rare, fixed profile. Stands on a foundation that doesn't bend, and influences its network from it. Fulfils its own fixed path.

5/1 — Heretic / Investigator. Seen as a saviour, backed by solid research. Offers practical solutions; must manage projection and reputation.

5/2 — Heretic / Hermit. Projected onto as a fixer, while wanting to be left alone. Its gifts get called out, sometimes before it's ready.

6/2 — Role Model / Hermit. The three-stage life plus natural talent. Often seen as wise from a distance, and needs its alone time.

6/3 — Role Model / Martyr. The three-stage life plus trial and error. A lot of experimenting in the first phase that becomes grounded wisdom later.

The three geometries

Profiles also fall into three groups, according to their incarnation cross:

  • Right angle (1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 2/5, 3/5, 3/6, 4/6) — a personal destiny. Life is mainly about one's own process.
  • Juxtaposition (4/1) — a fixed destiny, neither personal nor transpersonal.
  • Left angle (5/1, 5/2, 6/2, 6/3) — a transpersonal destiny. Life is significantly shaped by encounters with other people.

Your profile and your purpose

Your profile doesn't tell you what your purpose is; it tells you how you'll live it. A 1/3 will reach its purpose through study and trial; a 4/6 through relationships and time; a 5/1 through solving real problems for others. (Spiritual purpose and destiny.)

Why profile alone can mislead

Profile is one of the easiest parts of human design to over-identify with. "I'm a 3/5, so I'll always fail first" can become an excuse rather than an insight.

Cross-checking with other systems helps. A 3/5 whose astrology shows a strong Saturn and a life path 7 learns through trial very differently from a 3/5 with a Sagittarius sun and a life path 5. The profile gives the role; the other systems show how it's played.

SoulDecode computes your full bodygraph — type, authority, profile, centers, channels and incarnation cross — from your exact birth moment, then reads it together with your birth chart, numerology and Matrix of Destiny, showing where they agree. And because it's a guide rather than a report, you can bring it the real situation: I'm a 5/2 and everyone keeps asking me to fix their problems — how do I handle it?

Ask it anything, just like a private reading

This is the part most people don't expect. SoulDecode isn't a report you read once and file away. It works like sitting across from a reader who has your whole chart open in front of them: you ask whatever is on your mind, in your own words, and it answers from your profile, not a generic sign. Follow up as many times as you like, push back when something doesn't fit, and come back next week with what happened. For example:

  • “I'm a 5/2 and everyone asks me to fix their problems. How do I handle it?”
  • “As a 3rd line, how do I tell a useful mistake from a pattern?”
  • “What does my profile say about how I should network?”

There's no clock running and no question too small or too awkward. It remembers your chart and everything you've told it, so every conversation picks up where the last one left off. (How that compares with booking a 90-minute reading.)
