The 9 Human Design Centers

Open a human design chart — the bodygraph — and you'll see nine shapes, some coloured in and some white. Those are the centers, and they might be the most practical part of the whole system.

Your type is determined by which centers are defined and how they connect. Your authority comes from them too. But the centers themselves say something even more useful: where you're consistent, and where you're taking on other people's energy.

Defined, undefined and open

  • Defined (coloured). A consistent, reliable energy that's yours. It works the same way every day and you broadcast it to others.
  • Undefined (white, with some gates activated). A variable energy. You take in and amplify the energy of people around you. Here you can be wise — you experience this energy in many forms — or lost, mistaking other people's energy for your own.
  • Open (white, with no gates activated). Completely open. The influence of others is even stronger, and so is the potential wisdom about how that energy works in people.

Most human design teachers put it simply: your defined centers are who you are; your undefined centers are where you learn — and where you get conditioned.

The nine centers

Head — inspiration and mental pressure.
Defined: consistent ways of thinking and inspiration. Undefined: takes in other people's questions and worries; may feel pressure to answer questions that don't matter.
Not-self question: Am I thinking about things that don't matter to me?

Ajna — thinking and certainty.
Defined: a fixed way of processing and conceptualising. Undefined: flexible and open-minded; may pretend to be certain to fit in.
Not-self question: Am I trying to convince everyone I'm certain?

Throat — communication and action.
Defined: consistent voice and way of expressing. Undefined: may feel pressure to speak or attract attention; often speaks best when invited.
Not-self question: Am I trying to get attention?

G center — identity, love and direction.
Defined: a fixed sense of self and direction. Undefined: identity shifts with environment; the right places and people matter enormously.
Not-self question: Am I looking for love and direction?

Heart (Ego / Will) — willpower and worth.
Defined: consistent willpower; can make and keep promises. Undefined: around two-thirds of people. May feel the need to prove themselves, over-promise, or undervalue themselves.
Not-self question: Am I trying to prove my worth?

Sacral — life force and work energy.
Defined: sustainable energy for work that lights you up; the defining feature of Generators and Manifesting Generators. Undefined: energy isn't consistent; may not know when enough is enough.
Not-self question: Do I know when enough is enough?

Solar Plexus — emotions.
Defined: emotions come in waves; you need time for clarity (emotional authority). Undefined: absorbs and amplifies others' emotions; may avoid conflict to keep the peace.
Not-self question: Am I avoiding confrontation and truth?

Spleen — intuition, health and survival.
Defined: a consistent in-the-moment intuitive knowing and sense of well-being. Undefined: sensitive to health and others' fears; may hold on to what isn't good for it because it feels safer.
Not-self question: Am I holding on to things I should let go of?

Root — pressure and drive.
Defined: handles pressure in a consistent way. Undefined: amplifies pressure; may rush to get things done just to be free of the stress.
Not-self question: Am I in a hurry to get things done so I can be free of pressure?

Motors, awareness and pressure

The centers also fall into groups:

  • Motors (energy): Sacral, Heart, Solar Plexus, Root. A motor connected to the Throat is what makes someone a Manifestor or Manifesting Generator.
  • Awareness (knowing): Ajna, Spleen, Solar Plexus.
  • Pressure: Head (mental) and Root (physical).
  • Identity: the G center.
  • Expression: the Throat.

Why undefined centers matter so much

Your undefined centers are where you're most likely to be living someone else's life without knowing it.

  • An undefined Solar Plexus in a tense office will feel everyone's stress and think it's their own mood.
  • An undefined Heart will say yes to proving itself, over and over.
  • An undefined Root will rush every project because other people's urgency feels like its own.
  • An undefined G will change who it is depending on who it's with.

This is why the centers are one of the best maps for shadow work and for understanding relationship patterns: the person who defines your undefined center can feel electric — and can also be the person you lose yourself in.

How centers connect to the rest of your chart

Centers describe mechanics: where your energy is consistent and where it isn't. Other systems describe related things in their own language:

  • An undefined Solar Plexus often lines up with a sensitive moon in astrology — a Pisces or Cancer moon, or a moon in the 12th house. (Moon sign.)
  • An undefined Heart often echoes Saturn themes around worth, and numerology karmic lessons.
  • A defined Sacral and a strong Mars tend to mean sustained, physical energy.

When the systems agree, you know which pattern to take seriously. When they disagree, the disagreement often explains why you feel different in different settings.

Reading your centers with SoulDecode

SoulDecode computes your bodygraph from your exact birth moment — every defined and undefined center, the channels connecting them, your type, authority and profile — and reads it together with your birth chart, numerology and Matrix of Destiny. It names where you're consistent and where you're absorbing other people, and whether the other three systems agree. Then you can ask about the moment you're in: I came home from that meeting exhausted — whose energy was that?

Ask it anything, just like a private reading

This is the part most people don't expect. SoulDecode isn't a report you read once and file away. It works like sitting across from a reader who has your whole chart open in front of them: you ask whatever is on your mind, in your own words, and it answers from your profile, not a generic sign. Follow up as many times as you like, push back when something doesn't fit, and come back next week with what happened. For example:

  • “I came home from that meeting exhausted. Whose energy was that?”
  • “How do I stop over-promising with an undefined Heart?”
  • “Which of my open centers is most likely to be conditioning my decisions?”

There's no clock running and no question too small or too awkward. It remembers your chart and everything you've told it, so every conversation picks up where the last one left off. (How that compares with booking a 90-minute reading.)
