Synastry: Reading Two Charts Together

Sun-sign compatibility — "Leos and Sagittarians get on" — is the version of astrology most people meet first, and the least useful. Two Leos can have wildly different charts.

Synastry is the real thing: laying two full birth charts over each other and reading how one person's planets land on the other's. It shows where two people spark, soothe, frustrate and grow each other — and why a relationship can feel fated and difficult at once.

(For compatibility beyond astrology, see finding your soulmate.)

What you need

Synastry needs both people's exact birth dates, times and places. Without birth times, you lose the houses and the angles (ascendant, descendant, midheaven), which carry some of the most important information about how two people affect each other.

Two ways to compare charts

  • Synastry overlays the two natal charts. It shows how each person affects the other: my Venus on your Mars, your Saturn on my moon.
  • The composite chart is a single chart built from the midpoints of each pair of planets. It shows the relationship itself as a third entity — its purpose, its style, its challenges.

Both are worth reading. Synastry tells you about the two people; the composite tells you about the "us".

Inter-aspects: how your planets talk

Inter-aspects are aspects between one person's planets and the other's. The most significant:

  • Sun–moon. One of the classic signatures of a lasting bond: one person's identity meets the other's emotional needs. Conjunctions, trines and sextiles are especially comfortable.
  • Moon–moon. Emotional compatibility — whether you feel at home with each other.
  • Venus–Mars. Attraction and chemistry. Conjunctions and even squares can be magnetic.
  • Venus–Venus. Shared taste and values; how you each like to be loved.
  • Mercury–Mercury. How well you talk, argue and understand each other.
  • Saturn contacts. Saturn to a personal planet brings commitment, loyalty and weight — and, in hard aspect, criticism, restriction or a sense of duty. Many long marriages have strong Saturn ties.
  • Pluto contacts. Intensity, obsession and transformation. Powerful, sometimes consuming.
  • Nodal contacts. Planets on each other's lunar nodes often give a "fated" feeling — a sense of having met for a reason.

(Aspects, explained.)

House overlays: where you land in each other's lives

House overlays show where one person's planets fall in the other's houses. If your partner's Venus falls in your 7th house, they may feel like natural partner material to you. Their sun in your 10th may make them influential in your career or public life. Their moon in your 4th can make them feel like family.

Overlays aren't symmetrical. Your planets in their houses and their planets in yours tell two different stories — part of why relationships feel different from each side. (The 12 houses.)

Myths to ignore

  • "Squares mean it won't work." Many strong relationships have squares. They create friction and growth. A relationship with only trines can feel pleasant and aimless.
  • "Incompatible sun signs are doomed." Sun signs are a tiny part of the picture.
  • "A great synastry means a great relationship." Synastry shows potential and patterns. Whether two people handle them well is up to them.
  • "Karmic means meant to last." "Karmic" connections often mean intense and instructive, not permanent.

Why astrology alone can't settle compatibility

Synastry is detailed, but it's one lens, and it describes attraction and friction far better than day-to-day life. Two charts can have beautiful synastry and still be hard to live with, because astrology doesn't directly model things like how each person makes decisions or handles energy.

That's where other systems add real information:

  • Human design shows how two bodygraphs combine: channels formed between you (the electric feeling of completing each other), shared definition (where you're alike) and where one of you conditions the other. It also shows practical things like whether you both need time to decide, or whether one of you runs on far more energy. (Human design centers.)
  • Numerology compares life paths, soul urges and destiny numbers — whether you want the same things from life. (Soul urge.)
  • The Matrix of Destiny has a dedicated compatibility reading, combining both people's arcana into a shared matrix with its own purpose and karmic tasks.

When all four agree on where a relationship flows and where it strains, you've got something much more reliable than a single synastry chart.

How SoulDecode reads two people

SoulDecode reads compatibility across all four systems, not just astrology. Enter the other person's birth details, and it builds their full profile — birth chart, numerology, human design and Matrix of Destiny — and reads it alongside yours: where you naturally meet, where you'll clash, what each of you brings out in the other, and what the relationship is asking of you both. It works for any relationship — a partner, an ex, a parent, a boss or a friend — read through the right lens. And then you can ask it the questions a chart comparison can't: why do we always fight about plans? what does she need from me when she goes quiet?

Ask it anything, just like a private reading

This is the part most people don't expect. SoulDecode isn't a report you read once and file away. It works like sitting across from a reader who has your whole chart open in front of them: you ask whatever is on your mind, in your own words, and it answers from your profile, not a generic sign. Follow up as many times as you like, push back when something doesn't fit, and come back next week with what happened. For example:

  • “Why do we always fight about plans?”
  • “What does she need from me when she goes quiet?”
  • “Is this connection built to last, or built to teach us something?”

There's no clock running and no question too small or too awkward. It remembers your chart and everything you've told it, so every conversation picks up where the last one left off. (How that compares with booking a 90-minute reading.)
